Plasma Cutter Work Process

Plasma Cutter in Action

Thermite is a pyrotechnic composed of powder metallurgy and metal oxide. When ignited by heat, thermite undergoes an exothermic reduction-oxidation (redox) reaction and can create brief bursts of heat and high temperature in a small area.

The chemical equation below is the reaction of iron (III) oxide and aluminum. This is a single replacement reduction-oxidation (redox) reaction. Because aluminum produces a stronger bond with oxygen, this equation yields aluminum oxide, iron, and great quantities of heat.

Fe2O3 + 2 Al → 2 Fe + Al2O3

  1. A cartridge heater/thermal generator is heated by applying current from surface that ignites the thermite igniter
  2. The flame of the ignitor causes the solid thermite pellets to burn
  3. The burning thermite raises the temperature and the pressure inside the tool
  4. The mixture of hot plasma (molten iron and aluminum oxide) is forced thru the internal orifices of the severing head and onto the deflector with intense heat and high pressure

5. The deflector directs the hot plasma (6,000 deg F) toward the internal diameter of the tubing and cuts it instantaneously
